Resident & Family Reviews

MR

Margaret R.

Permanent Resident · United Kingdom

I had been living alone in Chiang Mai for three years and was finding the isolation harder than I expected. A friend suggested I look at Rim Suan. I came for a Discovery Day thinking it was probably not for me — and left already wondering when I could move in. The lunch alone changed my mind. Real food, real conversation.

Son of Permanent Resident · Bangkok

My mother has been at Rim Suan for almost two years. The thing I notice most when I visit is how much she knows the staff — and how much they know her. There is none of the institutional feel I was worried about. The family liaison arrangement works well; I receive updates without having to chase anyone.

Extended Comfort Stay · Japan

I stayed for the one-month trial with a fair amount of scepticism. I am quite particular about my routine and was not sure a shared community would suit me. What surprised me was how much choice I actually had. Nobody pushed me to join activities. I found my own rhythm within the first week. The personal host during that first week was genuinely helpful.

The gardens here are the reason I stay. I participate in the gardening program most mornings and have a small patch I tend myself. That may sound like a small thing, but it gives shape to a day in a way that matters to me. The meals are consistently good, and the staff remember small things — my preference for less spice, for example — without being asked again.

Daughter of Permanent Resident · Chiang Mai

My father was resistant to the idea of moving anywhere. We suggested the Discovery Day just to show him what was available. He came home saying the other residents seemed like people he would enjoy talking to. That was three years ago. He is still there, and still talking. I visit most months and always find him engaged and settled.

I appreciate the honesty here. During the Discovery Day they told me clearly what Rim Suan does not offer — no medical care, no nursing. That transparency made me trust everything else they said. The annual review they offer is something I have not encountered elsewhere, and it shows they are serious about the arrangement continuing to work for both sides.

Three Journeys to Rim Suan

These accounts represent the range of ways people find their way to living here — and what that transition looked like in practice.

From Solo Living to Community

A retired teacher from the UK, 74

The Situation

Living independently in Bangkok, managing well but finding that days were growing quieter and less structured than she would have liked. Her daughter in Singapore was concerned about long-term isolation.

What Changed

She took a Discovery Day first, then a month-long stay the following quarter. By the end of that month she had already chosen her suite. The gardening program and weekly group outings became central to her week.

Six Months Later

Settled, active, and by her own account considerably more content than she had been for several years. Her daughter visits regularly and says she looks ten years younger.

A Couple Settling Together

A Japanese couple, 71 and 68

The Situation

Retired and spending extended periods in Thailand. Wanted to simplify their arrangements and live somewhere that provided structure and social life without requiring them to manage a household.

What Changed

They enquired directly and chose an Extended Comfort Stay, then moved to a permanent arrangement within three months. The Thai cultural programming was particularly important to them — they wanted to remain in cultural life, not retreat from it.

Two Years Later

Both deeply engaged in the creative workshops and community events. Their children visit twice a year and appreciate the family liaison arrangements that keep them connected between visits.

Returning After a Health Change

A retired businessman from Thailand, 78

The Situation

Had lived independently for many years after retiring in Hua Hin. Following a brief health episode, his family wanted him in an environment that offered daily structure and nearby support, without clinical surroundings.

What Changed

His family arranged a Discovery Day and spoke frankly with the management about his situation. Rim Suan was direct about what it could and could not provide. The fit was right. He moved in the following month under a permanent arrangement.

One Year Later

A regular participant in the morning walks and community gatherings. His family has found the family liaison channel straightforward and genuinely responsive. The annual review confirmed the arrangement was working well for everyone.
